ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's swimming and diving team began the season with a strong non-conference showing, as they defeated Hiram, 185-92.
Leading the way for the Purple Radiers were seniors Alyson Kolesar (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) and Allison Davila (Middleburg Heights/Midpark), as well as sophomore Courtney Gabel (Fremont/Fremont Ross). The trio each won a pair of events for Mount Union.
Kolesar won the 50-yard backstroke (:29.49) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.20). Davila swept the 50 and 100 breaststroke events with times of :34.25 and 1:14.56, while Gabel took the 50 butterfly (:27.23) and the 50 free (:24.96).
Others placing first on the day were Kerry McCann (Bow, N.H./Bow) in the 1000 free (11:51.21), Katy Alkire (Akron/Firestone) in the 200 free (2:03.40), Wilma Levengood (New Philadelphia/New Philadelphia) in the 100 butterfly (1:03.80), Elizabeth Juran (Independence/Independence) in the 100 free (:57.45), and Taylor Harrison (New Philadelphia/New Philadelphia) in the 500 free (5:29.60).
In relay action, the 200 medley relay team of Juran, Gabel, Madalyn Zalewski (New Kensington, Pa./Valley), and Jocelyn Gaydos(Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) took first with a time of 1:55.51.
Mount Union (1-0) will return to the pool Friday at 6 p.m. for a conference meet with John Carroll.
