ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Wooster in a non-conference doubleheader on Senior Night, winning game one 5-4 and winning game two 6-2.
Before the games began seniors
Brooke Jacobs (Parma / Normandy) and
Lydia Wacker (Wellington / Black River) were honored for Senior Night.
The Purple Raiders (29-4) struck first in game one when junior
Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit an RBI single that brought in sophomore
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Fighting Scots (14-20-1) would answer in the top half of the third when Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez hit a two-run homerun to left center to take a 2-1 lead. Mount Union would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore
Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) hit an RBI double and then they would reclaim the lead in the fourth inning off an RBI double from Wacker, making the score 3-2. Wooster would come back to reclaim the lead in the sixth inning, scoring two runs off RBIs from Cate Barkdoll and Kaydee Clark.
Then, in the bottom half of the seventh Mercer would hit a walk-off two RBI double that scored sophomore
Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) and freshman
Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) to give the Raiders a 5-4 victory in game one.
Sophomore
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) got the start in the circle for the Raiders and gave up three runs, two earned on eight hits and struck out four.
The Raiders would strike first again in game two, again scoring off a George RBI single to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Then, in the third a bases clearing three RBI double from Culver started a four run third inning for Mount Union with the fourth run coming off an RBI single from Hahn to push the lead to 5-0.
The Scots would answer with a run of their own in the top half of the fourth when Barkdoll hit an RBI single to cut the lead down to four runs. The Raiders would get that run back in the bottom half of the inning when Reicosky scored off an RBI single from Cahill, pushing the lead back to five runs.
Wooster would cut it back to four in the fifth inning, scoring off an RBI single from Julia Jennings but that is as close as they would get as the Raiders would go on to take game two 6-2.
Sophomore
Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle in game two and gave up two runs on six hits and struck out six to pick up her tenth win of the season.
The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to Ada for an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup with Ohio Northern on Saturday, April 27 with game one beginning at 1 p.m. and game two following at 3 p.m.
