ADA, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Ohio Northern on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 6-1 and winning game two 11-0 in five innings.
After a scoreless first three innings in the Purple Raiders (31-4, 14-0 OAC) would break the tie in the fourth inning when sophomore
Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) hit a single to center field that brought in sophomore
Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Union would add another run in the top half of the fifth this time coming off a sacrifice fly RBI from sophomore
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) that scored sophomore
Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) to stretch the lead to two runs. The Raiders would add three more runs in the top of the sixth inning with RBIs coming from Kiko and sophomore
Lydia Brunner (Minerva) to make the lead 5-0.
The Polar Bears (21-15, 9-7 OAC) would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the sixth when Mariana Alejandro scored after an error to cut the lead down to four runs. However, Mount Union would push the lead back to five runs in the seventh when junior
Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit fly ball to left field that brought in Mercer. Ohio Northern wouldn't have an answer in the bottom half of the inning as the Raiders would go on to take game one 6-1.
Sophomore
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game one and gave up just one run, zero earned on six hits and struck out five.
The Raiders would strike first again in game two when Culver hit a two RBI single that scored Kiko and Brunner and then freshman
Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) had a sacrifice bunt RBI that scored sophomore
Emily Denney (Poland / Poland Seminary) to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Mount Union would add to their lead in the fourth inning with a massive five run inning with RBIs coming from Denney, Hahn, Mercer and Reicosky to stretch the lead to eight runs.
Then, in the top half of the fifth inning Culver hit her first career homerun, it was a three-run shot to left field to make the lead 11-0. The Polar Bears wouldn't have an answer in the bottom half of the fifth as the Raiders would go on to take game two 11-0 in five innings.
Sophomore
Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle in game two for Mount Union and gave up zero runs on four hits and struck out two.
The sweep clinched the OAC Regular Season Title for Mount Union for the second consecutive season, the Raiders will now be the top seed and host for the OAC Tournament in two weeks.
The Raiders are on the road again next when they travel to New Concord on Friday, May 3 to take on Muskingum in their OAC regular season finale, with game one beginning at 3 p.m. and game two beginning at 5 p.m.
