Softball: Raiders Blank Capital in Sweep

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon, winning game one 7-0 and winning game two 8-0 in five innings.

The Purple Raiders (27-4, 12-0 OAC) would strike first in game one when junior Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit an RBI single that scored sophomore Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Union would add to that lead in the second inning, scoring three runs with RBIs coming from sophomore Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch), Reicosky and George to push the lead to four runs. Then, in the sixth the Raiders would add three more runs this time with RBIs coming from Mercer, George and sophomore Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) to push the lead to 7-0.

The Comets (10-12, 5-9 OAC) weren't able to plate any runs in the top half of the seventh as the Raiders would go on to win 7-0.

Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up zero runs on just four hits and struck out four.

The Raiders would strike first again in game two when Reicosky hit an RBI single that brought home Mercer in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Then, in the second inning Mercer hit a bases clearing RBI triple and then got brought in by a Reicosky sacrifice bunt to push the lead out to five runs in the second inning. Then, in the bottom of the fourth Mount Union would add three more runs coming off RBIs from Mercer and George to make the lead 8-0.

Capital was unable to score any runs in the fifth inning as the Raiders would go on to take game two 8-0 in five innings.

Sophomore Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game two and pitched all five innings, giving up zero runs on two hits and striking out one. 

The Raiders are home again next when they host Wooster on Thursday, April 25 for Senior Night, game one will begin at 3:30 p.m. and game two at 5:30 p.m. at the 23rd Street Softball Field in Alliance.
