Softball: Raiders Sweep Day Five in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team swept a pair of games on the fifth day of their Florida trip, beating Chatham 10-0 in five innings and beating Alvernia 7-1 on Thursday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (8-1) struck first in their first game of the day when junior Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit an RBI single that scored sophomore Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) and then sophomore Lydia Brunner (Minerva) hit an RBI double to left center that brought in George and sophomore Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) to make the lead 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Mount Union would add to their lead in the bottom half of the second with a massive five run inning with RBIs coming from sophomore Kaitlyn Culver (Girard), sophomore Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover), Mercer and Brunner to extend the lead to eight runs. The Raiders would add two more runs in the third inning when Culver scored on a throw down to second and then Brunner had an RBI that scored George and make the lead 10-0.

The Cougars (2-6) wouldn't have answer over the next two innings as the Raiders would go on to win 10-0 in five innings.

Sophomore Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out four in three innings of action. Freshman Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) came in to pitch the final two innings of relief and gave up zero runs on two hits and struck out one.

After a scoreless first three innings in their second game of the day the Raiders broke the tie in the top half of the fourth with three runs and RBIs coming from Kiko, Brunner and sophomore Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover). They would then add to their lead in the fifth inning when Cahill hit an RBI single to left field that scored freshman Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) and then Kiko hit a two-RBI double to left field that brought in George and junior Sami Swartz (Columbus / Grandview Heights) to extend the lead to six runs. Then, in the top half of the sixth inning Mercer hit an RBI single to center field that brought home Culver and made the lead 7-0.

The Golden Wolves (4-3) would answer with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Maddie Matthews scored on an error by the catcher to cut the lead to six runs but that's as close as they would get as the Raiders would go on to win 7-1.

Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched five scoreless innings giving up just three hits and striking out four. Freshman Emma Reese (Alliance) came in to pitch the final two innings in relief and gave up one run on two hits.
