KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team swept the final day of their Spring Break trip in Florida with a 2-0 win over Emmanuel (Mass.) and a 7-1 win over Allegheny on Friday.
The Purple Raiders (10-1) struck first in their first game of the day when sophomore
Lydia Brunner (Minerva) hit a sacrifice RBI that scored sophomore
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Union would then add an insurance run in the top half of the sixth when Cahill hit an RBI single up the middle that scored sophomore
Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) to extend the lead to two runs.
The Saints (3-6) didn't have an answer over the final two innings of play as the Raiders would go on to win 2-0.
Sophomore
Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just three hits and striking out six in the win.
The Raiders would strike first again in game two, scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Cahill hit a sacrifice fly to right field and brought home sophomore
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Union would then add to their lead in the bottom half of the third with a massive five run inning with RBIs coming from junior
Tori Sickafoose (Magnolia / Sandy Valley), sophomore
Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) and freshman
Emma Reese (Alliance) to extend the lead to six runs.
The Gators (9-1) would answer with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning when Olivia Devries hit a solo home run to left field to cut the lead to 6-1. However, the Raiders would stretch the lead back out to six in the bottom half of the inning when an RBI triple from Cahill brought in freshman
Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) and they would go on to win 7-1.
Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched a complete game giving up just one run on two hits and striking out six.
The Raiders return home next when they host Penn State-Behrend in their home opener on Saturday, March 16 at the 23
rd Street Softball Field in Alliance, Ohio with game one starting at 1 p.m. and game two following at 3 p.m.
