COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team split with Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, losing game one 2-1 and winning game two 8-0 in five innings.
The Comets (10-14, 2-8 OAC) struck first in game one when Lexie Leggett hit a solo homerun down the left field line in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Capital would add to their lead in the bottom half of the second Krislyn Bayles scored on a throw down to second to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Purple Raiders (22-6, 7-3 OAC) would cut into the lead in the top of the fourth inning when sophomore
Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit a solo homerun to left center field to cut the lead down to a run. However, Mount Union wouldn't be able to score anymore runs as Capital would go on to take game one 2-1.
Freshman
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up two runs on five hits and struck out five in the loss.
The Raiders struck first in game two when senior
Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) hit an RBI single that scored freshman
Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Mount Union would add to their lead in the top half of the third when freshman
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) scored on a throwing error by the Comets pitcher and then Kiko hit a two RBI double that scored Cahill and George to extend the lead to 5-0. The Raiders would go on to add three more runs in the top of the fifth inning, the first coming off a solo homerun from Cahill and the final two coming off RBIs from Heath and freshman
Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover).
Capital wouldn't be able to close the gap as the Raiders would go on to win 8-0 in five innings.
Cahill got the start again in the circle for Mount Union and gave up zero runs on two hits, with four strikeouts in four innings of action. Freshman
Chloe Bird (Norton) came in to pitch the final inning of relief gave up zero runs on one hit and struck out one.
The Raiders are back home next when they host John Carroll for an OAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 19, with games starting at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. in Alliance.
