ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against John Carroll on Wednesday evening, winning game one 6-0 and losing game two 11-9.
The Purple Raiders (23-7, 8-4 OAC) struck first in game one, scoring in the bottom of the second inning when junior
Ally Nittoli (Poland / Poland Seminary) hit an RBI single to score sophomore
Adri George (Eastlake / North) to take a 1-0 lead. Mount Union would add two more runs to their lead in the bottom half of the fifth with RBIs coming from freshman
Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) and senior
Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) to increase the lead to 3-0. The Raiders would go on to add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when freshman
Lydia Brunner (Minerva) hit a three RBI triple to make the lead 6-0.
The Blue Streaks (14-12, 4-8 OAC) wouldn't be able to answer in the final inning as Mount Union would go on to win 6-0.
Freshman
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up zero runs on one hit while striking out three in six innings of action. Freshman
Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa. / Reynolds) came in to pitch the final inning and gave up zero runs on one hit.
John Carroll would strike first in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the third inning with RBIs coming from Melissa Smith and Lexie Genovese to take a 3-0 lead.
The Raiders answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth scoring off a two RBI single from senior
Alexis Temple (Mentor) and a two RBI single from Brunner. Mount Union would add four more runs to their lead in the bottom half of the fifth with RBIs coming from Temple, Brunner and Kiko to increase the lead to 8-3.
The Blue Streaks would come storming back in the top of the sixth scoring eight runs, with RBIs coming from Kendall Trunzo, Kaylyn Odelli, Nina Scavelli, Smith and Genovese to take a 10-8 lead.
Mount Union would answer with a run in the bottom of the sixth when George hit a sacrifice fly that scored freshman
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to cut the lead to 11-9, however the Raiders wouldn't be able to score anymore runs as John Carroll would go on to win 11-9.
Cahill got the start in the circle again for Mount Union, she gave up five runs, three earned and struck out four in 6.1 innings of work. Herman came in to pitch 0.1 innings and gave up three runs on three hits. Freshman
Chloe Bird (Norton) came in and pitched 0.1 innings of relief, giving up three runs on two hits.
The Raiders are back in action again tomorrow when they host Westminster in a non-conference doubleheader, with game one starting at 3:30 p.m. and game two starting at 5:30 p.m. in Alliance.
