BEREA, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Baldwin Wallace in a doubleheader in Ohio Athletic Conference play, winning game one 1-0 and taking game two 10-4.
The Purple Raiders (19-16-1, 9-6-1 OAC) struck first in game one scoring in the top of the first inning when senior
Alyssa Rose (Madison) hit a single that advanced junior
Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) to third and then she scored after a throwing error by the Baldwin Wallace center fielder.
Neither team would be able to plate any runs for the remainder of the game and Mount Union would go on to win 1-0.
Senior
Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) pitched a complete game shutout for the Raiders, giving up just one hit and struck out eight.
Mount Union struck first again in game two scoring two runs in the top half of the first when Heath and Rose both hit solo home runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets (12-18, 7-7 OAC) would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the first scoring off a solo home run from Ashley Matousek. Baldwin Wallace would then tie the game at two in the second inning off an RBI single from Emily Mau.
The Raiders would reclaim the lead in the top of the third off an RBI single from Rose that scored senior
Isabella Sherban (Louisville / St. Thomas Aquinas). The Yellow Jackets would take their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the third when Bridie Bricker hit a two-run home run to take a 4-3 lead.
Mount Union would take the lead back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, the first run came when junior
Alexis Temple (Mentor) scored on a wild pitch. The second run came when Rose hit a two RBI double that scored senior
Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley) and Heath. The Raiders would add to their lead in the seventh inning scoring off a sacrifice fly from Guspyt that brought home Temple and then a three-run home run from Rose and would go on to win 10-4.
Rose got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up three runs on three hits in two innings. Junior
Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) came in and pitched 1.1 innings of relief giving up one run on three hits and striking out one. Senior
Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) also came in to pitch and gave up zero runs on zero hits in 0.2 innings. Morrison came in to pitch the final three innings and gave up zero runs on two hits and struck out three to pick up the save.
The Raiders are on the road again next as they travel to Columbus to take on Capital in an OAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 30, game one is set to begin at 1 p.m. with game two following at 3 p.m.
