Raiders Sweep Capital in Regular Season Finale

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, winning game one 12-4 and taking game two 10-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (21-16-1, 11-6-1 OAC) struck first in game one scoring two runs in the top of the first inning when senior Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley) hit an RBI single that brought home junior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch), then Guspyt scored on a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead.

The Comets (5-27, 1-17 OAC) would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Liz Stonerock hit an RBI double that scored Tiffany Zuelzke. The Raiders would add to their lead in the top of the second inning, scoring five runs with RBIs coming from Guspyt, senior Alyssa Rose (Madison), senior Hanna Ingram (Stow) and freshman Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa.) to extend their lead to 7-1. Mount Union would add another run in the top half of the third when Guspyt hit an RBI single that brought home junior Alexis Temple (Mentor).

Capital would cut into the lead in the bottom of the third with three runs of their own, with RBIs coming from Krislyn Bayles and Kayedon Martin to cut the Raider lead down to 8-4. Mount Union would then add to their lead in the fifth and seventh innings. The run in the fifth came off a sacrifice fly from Guspyt that scored senior Isabella Sherban (Louisville / St. Thomas Aquinas). The Raiders would score three runs in the seventh, scoring off an RBI single from Guspyt and a two-run home run from Rose and would go on to win 12-4.

Mount Union finished with 18 hits in game one and had seven players with multiple hits. Guspyt finished the game with five RBIs and Rose finished with four RBIs and a homerun.

Senior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) got the start in the circle for the Raiders giving up just one run on four hits and struck out two in two innings. Senior Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) came in to pitch the final five innings in relief and gave up three runs on six hits and struck out three.

Mount Union would strike first again in game two when Rose hit an RBI single that brought home Heath in the top of the first inning. The Comets would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning when Kelcie Schnitzler hit an RBI single that scored Stonerock.

The Raiders would retake the lead in the third inning scoring four runs, the first came after Ingram hit a single that scored Heath, then Bish reached first on an error by the Capital third baseman and Ingram scored. The next two runs came off a two-run home run from freshman Adri George (Eastlake / North) to give Mount Union a 5-1 lead.

Mount Union would add three more runs in the fifth inning the first coming when Rose scored off a throwing error by the Comet's catcher, the second would come off an RBI from senior Savannah Miner (Louisville) that brought home Ingram. The final run of the inning came off an RBI single from Temple that scored freshman Sami Swartz (Columbus / Grandview Heights). The Raiders would add to their lead again in the sixth inning when Ingram hit an RBI double that scored Rose and then George hit an RBI double that brought home Ingram and give Mount Union a 10-1 victory.

Rose started in the circle for Mount Union and gave up just one run on five hits, while striking out two in four innings. Senior Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) came in to pitch the final two innings in relief and gave up zero runs on one hit.

The Raiders return to action on Thursday, May 5 as they travel to Ada, Ohio for the OAC Tournament.
