Raiders Split the Day

CLERMONT, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games on Friday, falling to Moravian (Pa.) 8-1 and beat Russell Sage (N.Y.) 5-2.

The Greyhounds (10-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, they would then add three more in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead. Moravian would add four more runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 8-0.

The Purple Raiders (2-2) got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth when freshman Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa.) hit an RBI triple down the left field line to cut the Greyhound lead to 8-1. Mount Union wouldn't be able to drive in any more runs and would fall 8-1.

Senior Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) got the start in the circle for the Raiders and gave up four runs on five hits.

In the second game of the day Mount Union got out to an early 4-0 lead scoring one run in the first and three in the second coming off RBIs by junior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) and senior Alyssa Rose (Madison).

The Gators (1-1) would cut into the lead with a run in the third inning, but the Raiders would add another run in the fourth off another Heath RBI, to extend their lead to 5-1. Russell Sage cut the lead down to 5-2 but the Raiders would be able to hang on to take the 5-2 win.

Rose got the start and the win in the circle for Mount Union, pitching five innings and giving up just one run with six strikeouts. Senior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) picked up the save for the Raiders, striking out two in the one inning she pitched.
