Raiders Open Season with Double-Digit Win

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Mount Union's men's lacrosse team out-scored Thiel 8-0 in the third quarter for a 19-8 win in the season opener Saturday afternoon.
 
The Purple Raiders (1-0) led wire to wire with their first goal just 49 seconds into the game from junior Logan Addonizio (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western)
 
Sophomore Eli Ciotti (Canonsburg, Pa. / Linsly School) led Mount Union with five goals with Addonizio scoring four. Sophomores Logan Gebhart (McDonald, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) and Mark Zusman (Willoughby / Willoughby South) both score two goals.
 
Bennett Medyn had three goals to pace Thiel (0-1).
 
Mount Union began the game with four straight goals from Addonizio, Ciotti, Zusman and senior Alek Kungle (Heartville / Lake). Thiel responded with three goals to end the quarter.
 
Back and forth goals began the second period with Ciotti and Gebhart scoring for the Raiders with a 6-4 lead. A goal a piece from freshmen Connor Addison (Mishawaka, Ind. / South Bend) and Liam Erwin (Victor, N.Y. / Victor Senior) pushed the lead out to 8-5 with Thiel getting one more goal in the half.
 
Mount Union scored nine straight goals with eight in the third period and one to start the fourth period. Addonizio and Ciotti both score three while Gebhart, Zusman and sophomore Cole Benson (Hilton Head, S.C. / Hilton Head) each scored one.
 
Seniors Alex Ellison (Uniontown / Lake) and Clay Barkan (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) both scored one more goal in the fourth quarter to finish off the game.
 
Junior Kyle Reihner (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton Prep) got nine saves playing all 60 minutes in the win.
 
Mount Union will play its home opener next Saturday, Feb. 26 at 4 p.m. against Saint Vincent (Pa.)
