ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's lacrosse team lost its home opener, 7-5, to St. Vincent (Pa.) Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.
The Purple Raiders (1-1) took a 4-3 lead on a Grant Dunmire (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) goal with 7:47 left in the third quarter, but St. Vincent (2-0) finished the game on a 4-1 run for the victory.
Alec Richard had three goals and assist to lead St. Vincent.
Alek Kungle (Hartville / Lake) had a goal and an assist to pace Mount Union.
Richard got things started for the Bearcats with a goal at the 9:38 mark of the first quarter. Mount Union's Liam Erwin (Victor, N.Y.) tied the game on a man down goal assisted by keeper Kyle Reihner (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton Prep) almost three minutes later. St. Vincent retook the lead with a Jordan Billet score with just over three minutes in the quarter.
Mount Union scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second quarter as Logan Gebhart (McDonald, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) got a man-up goal and Alex Ellison (Uniontown / Lake) scored to give the Raiders a 3-2 lead. Richard scored with 6:08 left in the half for St. Vincent and it was 3-3 at the break.
The Raiders retook the lead, 4-3, on Dunmire's score with 7:47 left in the third quarter but Caleb Hawkins retied it and Andrew Coholich put St. Vincent back up 5-4 heading to the fourth.
St. Vincent extended the lead on scores from Richard and a man-up goal from Coholich with 6:42 to play.
Kungle scored with 4:28 remaining but the Raiders comeback ended there with the 7-5 final.
St. Vincent out-shot Mount Union, 45-21 and Reihner had 25 saves for the Raiders.
Mount Union stays home to host Westminster (Pa.) Saturday, March 5 at 1 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
