(ALLIANCE, OH)--Mount Union College's men's soccer team earned
its first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout of Waynesburg
University in the first round of the Geneva College Invitational in
Beaver Falls, PA.
The win evens the Purple Raiders record at 1-1 while Waynesburg
falls to 0-2 overall.
Sophomore Kevin Cindric (Willowick/Eastlake North) got Mount
Union on the board quickly as he took a feed from senior Chris
Bondra (Mentor/NDCL) and junior Korey Smerk (Brook Park/Midpark)
and scored in the game's second minute.
Bondra then assisted on a score from freshman Tim Debth (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) in the 21st minute to give the
Raiders a 2-0 lead at the half.
Debth then tallied his second goal of the game in the 71st
minute off an assist from fellow freshman Joey Merlo
(Niles/Cardinal Mooney).
All of this was more than enough offense for freshman keeper Jon Critell (Youngstown/Cardinal Mooney) who had three saves in earning
his first collegiate win in just his second start.
Mount Union is back on the field tomorrow as they take on Geneva
College at 4 pm.
