WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania—The Mount Union women's lacrosse team outscored Washington and Jefferson by four in the fourth quarter to bring home a 14-12 victory Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (2-2) were led by
Mae Pawlikowski with five goals and one assist.
Ella Nejad and
Haylee Handrahan each scored three goals while
Emma Labbe, Aliva Very and
Lizzie Dorley each scored one goal.
Nejad finished the game with eight draw controls while
Kaitlyn Kuczinski picked up the win in goal making five saves and allowing just five goals.
Washington and Jefferson (0-2) was led by Mya Bolinda with five goals while Madison Hecker was in goal making five saves for the 60 minutes.
W&J got the first two goals of the game, but Mount Union responded with a goal from Pawlikowski and Nejad to tie the game up with 9:08 remaining in the first. W&J finished the quarter on a 3-0 run, leading 5-2.
W&J took the momentum into the second quarter scoring two more leading 7-2. Mount Union stopped the momentum with a goal from Dorley and Handrahan to end the quarter trailing 7-4.
A back and forth third period saw W&J take an 11-7 lead as Nejad scored twice and Very scored a goal. Pawlikowski and Handrahan scored to end the third quarter getting within two at the end of the third.
Mount Union brought that momentum into the final period as Handrahan and Pawlikowski each scored again to tie the game up. A goal from W&J with 8:23 was the last goal for the Presidents. Mount Union then got a goal from Pawlikowski with 3:17 left to tie the game a goal from Labbe with 1:39 to take the lead and the final goal from Pawlikowski with :35 second remaining to put the game away.
Mount Union will take a week break before heading to Cortland, New York taking on SUNY Cortland on March 10th at 4 PM.
