Women's Basketball: Raiders Fly by Comets in OAC Play

BEXLEY, Ohio—The Mount Union women's basketball team took down Capital 70-50 on the road Wednesday night in Ohio Athletic Conference play.
 
The Purple Raiders (12-4, 4-3 OAC) were led by Chelsea Evanich (Alliance / Marlington) and Tess Conroy (Valley View / Cuyahoga Heights) with 12 points each.
 
Makayla Dunkle (Cadiz / Harrison Central Catholic) finished with a double-double with 14 rebounds and 10 points, Lily Scott (Youngstown / Ursuline) finished with 11 points while Reese Triplett (New Philadelphia / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) finished with 10 points.
 
Capital (10-6, 3-4 OAC) was led by Samaree Perkins who finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds.
 
Mount Union got off to an 8-3 lead with baskets from three different Raiders. Capital closed to within two at 8-6 but Triplett scored five straight points and a three from Scott Mount Union a 16-6 lead with 1:20 left in the quarter. Both teams traded and-one buckets over the final 46 seconds of the quarter with Mount Union taking a 19-9 lead into the second quarter.
 
Early in the second quarter Mount Union pushed the lead out to 14 with two free throws and a shot made by Bree McCabe (Massillon / Tuslaw). Capital went on a 7-2 run in the middle of the quarter, trailing Mount Union 29-20. In the final two minutes of the quarter Mount Union outscored Capital 5-2 taking a 34-22 lead into the halftime break.
 
Mount Union came out in the third quarter and took control of the game, going on a 19-2 run over the first seven minutes of the quarter leading 53-24 as Conroy led the charge with eight points in the run. Capital would close the lead slightly the final three minutes as Mount Union took a 55-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Capital began the fourth quarter closing the lead down to 13 with 5:08 to play but a bucket from Dunkle and a jumper from Conroy pushed the lead out to 16 for Mount Union. Mount Union closed out the final three minutes outscoring Capital 10-4.
 
Mount Union now gets a week off before taking on Heidelberg next Wednesday at home at 7 pm.
