SALISBURY, Md. – Mount Union's softball team fell 5-3 in nine innings in their first game of the day against no. 8 nationally ranked Salisbury, then in their elimination game against no. 20 nationally ranked Pfeiffer play was suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning with the game tied at a run apiece.
The Seagulls (35-6-1) struck first with a run in the first inning when Carrie Jacoby hit an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
The Purple Raiders (28-13) would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the same inning when junior
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) hit a leadoff solo home run down the left field line to tie the game at a run apiece.
Salisbury would reclaim the lead in the top of the ninth inning when Karlie Wolfe hit a two-run homerun down the left field line to take a 3-1 lead. They would then add two more runs to that lead when Emily Challender and Jillian Dawson hit back-to-back home runs to push the lead to four runs.
Mount Union would answer in the bottom half of the inning when junior
Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) hit a two-run home run to left center to cut the lead to two runs, however that's as close as the Raiders would get as Salisbury would go on to win 5-3.
Junior
Kendyll Cahill (Groveport / Groveport Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched 8.2 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits and struck out one. Sophomore
Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) came in and pitched 0.1 innings in relief, giving up zero runs on zero hits and striking out one.
Mount Union would take on no. 20 nationally ranked Pfeiffer in an elimination game after the Falcons defeated Westminster in the first elimination game of the day.
With a double in the bottom of the first inning against Pfeiffer, senior
Adri George (Eastlake / North) broke the school record for career doubles, recording the 46
th of her career. The record which was set by current head coach
Meghan Simons had stood since 2010.
The Raiders would then get on the board first when senior
Tori Sickafoose (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) hit an RBI single that scored sophomore
Karlie Davis (St. Leon, Ind. / East Central) to take a 1-0 lead.
The Falcons (36-8) would come back to tie the game at a run apiece in the bottom half of the fifth when Charly Cooper hit an RBI single.
Freshman
Emma Reemsnyder (Canton / GlenOak) got the start in the circle for Mount Union, giving up one run on five hits and struck out two in 4.2 innings of action. McCalla would come in to pitch 1.1 innings in relief and gave up zero runs on zero hits. Junior
Chloe Bird (Norton) would come in to pitch the final inning and gave up zero runs on three hits.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, play was suspended due to weather and darkness and will resume tomorrow at a time to be determined. More information will be posted here and on the @purpleraiders social media accounts.
