Softball: Raiders Swept in OAC Action Against Baldwin Wallace

BEREA, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team was swept in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday evening, falling in game one 4-3 and dropping game two 6-5.

The Purple Raiders (11-9, 1-3 OAC) would strike first in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning when junior Lydia Brunner (Minerva) hit a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Karlie Davis (St. Leon, Ind. / East Central) and then junior Abbie Gayner (Akron / Revere) scored after an error by the catcher to take a 2-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets (16-1, 6-0 OAC) would cut into the lead in the third inning when Lucia Wolford hit an RBI single to cut the lead to just a run. Baldwin Wallace would then tie the game in the bottom half of the fifth again off a Wolford RBI, tying the game at two runs apiece. The Yellow Jackets would then claim their first lead of the game in the following inning when Bridie Bricker hit a solo homerun to left center field. They would then add a second run in the same inning when Steph Mraz scored on a throwing error by the second baseman to take a 4-2 lead.

Mount Union would answer with a run in the seventh when Gayner scored after an error by the pitcher but that is as close as they would get as Baldwin Wallace would go on to take game one 4-3.

Junior Kendyll Cahill (Groveport / Groveport Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game one and would throw a complete game giving up four runs, three earned on 10 hits and struck out one.

The Yellow Jackets would strike first in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the first off RBIs from Maddie Lester and Bricker to take a 2-0 lead.

The Raiders would then answer in the top half of the following inning, scoring three runs of their own, the first coming after senior Tori Sickafoose (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) stole home, then Brunner scored on a wild pitch and the final run came off a sacrifice fly from junior Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) that scored junior Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) to take a 3-2 lead.

Baldwin Wallace would reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the same inning when Wolford hit a two-RBI double to make it a 4-3 lead. Mount Union would tie the game in the following inning when Brunner hit an RBI that scored freshman Allison Jones (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) to tie the game at four runs apiece.

The Yellow Jackets would once again answer to reclaim their lead in the bottom of the third inning, this time scoring off an RBI single from Mia Maddamma to take a 5-4 lead. Mount Union would tie the game once again in the sixth inning when junior Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) hit an RBI that brought in Culver to tie the game at five runs apiece. However, in the bottom of the seventh Baldwin Wallace would score on a walk-off RBI double from Mraz to claim the 6-5 victory.

Freshman Emma Reemsnyder (Canton / GlenOak) got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game two and gave up five runs on six hits in three innings of work. Sophomore Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) would come in to throw the final 3.1 innings in relief and gave up one run on five hits and struck out one.

The Raiders are on the road again next when they travel to Columbus to take on OAC opponent Capital in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 with game one beginning at 1 p.m. and game two beginning at 3 p.m.
