Softball: Raiders Split Fifth Day of Spring Break Trip

BARTOW, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games on the second-to-last day of their spring break trip, beating Kean 11-1 in five innings and falling 3-2 against Hiram on Thursday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (7-3) would strike first in their first game of the day with two runs in the bottom of the first inning; the first came after junior Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) scored on a wild pitch, and then junior Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) stole home to make the lead 2-0.

Mount Union would then explode for nine runs in the second inning, scoring off RBIs from senior Adri George (Eastlake / North), junior Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison), junior Kaitlyn Culver (Girard), sophomore Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield), and freshman Allison Jones (Berlin Center / Western Reserve) to stretch the lead to 11 runs.

The Cougars (7-9) would answer with a run of their own in the top half of the third when Andee Perseponko hit a sacrifice fly to score Kiley Allen, but that is as close as they would get as the Raiders would go on to win 11-1 in five innings.

Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out one in two innings of work. Junior Chloe Bird (Norton) would come in and throw an inning in relief, giving up one run on one hit. Freshman Daniella Vecchio (Monongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) would come in to throw the final two innings and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out one.

The Raiders would strike first again in their second game of the day, scoring two runs in the first inning. The first run came off an RBI from Cahill that brought in Mercer, and the second run came off a Culver RBI that scored Reicosky to take a 2-0 lead.

The Terriers (4-2) would come storming back in the sixth inning to claim their first lead of the game, scoring three runs off RBIs from Darian Kanno, Haven Papineau, and Caylen Gonzalez. Mount Union wouldn't have an answer in the seventh inning as Hiram would go on to win 3-2.

Cahill got the start again in the circle for Mount Union and pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out three.

The Raiders wrap up their Florida trip tomorrow with another pair of games, taking on No. 18 nationally ranked Calvin at 9:30 a.m. and Washington at 12 p.m. in Bartow, Fla.
