ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's women's basketball team defeated Ohio Northern 67-59 in Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday evening.
Mount Union defeated Ohio Northern for the first time in the last 12 matchups and the first home win against Ohio Northern since 2018.
The Purple Raiders (9-3, 2-2 OAC) had three players score in double figures with sophomore
Lily Scott (Youngstown / Ursuline) leading the way with a team-high 13 points. Junior
Tess Conroy (Valley View / Cuyahoga Heights) and sophomore
Kayla Ferancy (Amherst / Amherst Steele) rounded out the Raiders in double digits, scoring 10 points apiece.
The Polar Bears (2-8, 2-1 OAC) were led by Emerson Gray who scored a game-high 17 points, Gabi Croft who added in 13 and Lexee Brewer who scored 11 points.
Mount Union would open the game with a 12-2 run over the first 5:50 of action to grab the early first quarter lead. The teams would go back and forth, trading baskets over the remaining four minutes of the first quarter as the Raiders would hold onto a 17-8 lead heading to the quarter break.
Ohio Northern would open the second quarter with a 14-5 run over 4:14 of game time to grab their first lead of the game at 24-22 with just under five and a half minutes to play in the half. Once again, the teams would trade baskets back and forth over the final half of the quarter as the Polar Bears would take a narrow 29-28 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter would be a back-and-forth affair with neither team being able to gain much of an advantage. The lead would change hands four times throughout the quarter and would be tied three times. A jumper from junior
Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) with just five seconds remaining in the quarter would give the Raiders a 47-45 lead heading to the fourth and final quarter.
Mount Union and Ohio Northern would continue trading baskets back and forth to start the fourth quarter with the Raiders holding on to their narrow 58-56 lead with 2:51 left to play. The Raiders would then go on a 9-3 run to close the game and secure 67-59 victory.
The Raiders are home again next when they host non-conference opponent Thiel on Tuesday, December 30 at 7 p.m. at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Conference in Alliance.
