NORTH MANCHESTER, Indiana—The Mount Union women's basketball team opened its season with a 52-39 win over Kalamazoo (Mich.) on Saturday night to advance to the championships game of the Teammates for Life tournament.
The Purple Raiders (1-0) were led by
Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) with 16 points and
Tess Conroy (Valley View / Cuyahoga Heights) with 10 points.
Kalamazoo (0-1) was led by Semaj Robertson with 13 points.
Mount Union jumped out to a 20-6 lead after one quarter allowing no made baskets as Kalamazoo only made six free throws. Mount Union then outscored Kalamazoo 10-6 in the second quarter, taking a 30-12 lead into the halftime break.
Kalamazoo outscored Mount Union in the second half 27-22 but never got within single digits as Mount Union won the match up 52-39.
Mount Union held Kalamazoo to just 23.5% shooting from the field and 5.3% from three for the game while outrebounding them 43 to 34 and caused 10 more turnovers in the game.
With the win, Mount Union will take on the host Manchester (Ind.) at 3 pm in the championship on Sunday.
