WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated Case Western Reserve 82-72 in the championship game of the Omni Ink Waynesburg Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (4-0) had three players score in double figures with junior
Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) leading the way with a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double. Sophomore
Chance Casenhiser (Uniontown / Lake) and junior
Kevin Hamilton (Akron / St. Vincent St. Mary) scored 20 and 17 respectively to round out the Raiders in double digits. Junior
Shaun Vaden (Cleveland / Cornerstone Christian) recorded eight blocks in the game to break the single game school record that was previously held by
Christian Parker when he recorded seven against Marietta in 2023.
The Spartans (3-1) were led by Alex Vincent who scored a team-high 14 points, Anestis Hadjistamoulou who added in 13 and Andrew Fox who scored 12 points.
Case Western jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the first three and a half minutes of the game. They would maintain that lead over the next seven minutes of game time before Mount Union would answer with a 9-2 run to cut the lead down to 29-28 with 7:16 to play in the first half. Both teams would go back and forth over the next four and a half minutes of game time before the Raiders would close the half on a 7-1 run to claim a four-point 42-38 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Raiders and Spartans would go back and forth over the first six minutes of the second half until Mount Union would go on a 10-0 run over the next 3:18 of game time to take the largest lead of the game at 67-54 with 10:40 remaining in the game. The teams would once again trade baskets over the next couple minutes before a quick 9-0 run from Case Western cut the lead to two with just under five minutes left to play. That's as close as they would get though as Mount Union would close the game on an 11-3 run to close out the 82-72 victory.
The Raiders are on the road again next when they head to Cincinatti to take on Transylvania on Saturday, November 22 at 6 p.m.
