ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Mount Union women's volleyball team swept both Albion and Rochester (NY) to start the Mount Union Invitational Friday night.
Mount Union (2-0) swept Albion (0-2) 25-18, 25-23 and 25-20 as the Purple Raiders avenged a five-set loss to Albion last season.
Mount Union picked up 13 blocks as a team to get the season going as
Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake) and
Ava Bolen (Wellsburg, Pa. / Brooke) each picking up five blocks.
Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) led Mount Union in hitting with 14 kills while Meyer picked up seven.
Setters
Casey Kildow (Bethesda / Union Local) and
Melissa Hansen (Hudson) picked up 15 assists each while
Katelyn Lesko (Mineral Ridge) and
Averi Haley (Orrville) picked up 12 and 11 digs respectively.
Leading Albion was Carly Frank with 16 kills while Paige Williamson picked up 18 digs.
In the second match of the day Mount Union swept Rochester (0-2) 25-14, 25-20 and 25-16 to pick up its second win of the day.
Meyer picked up six blocks with five assisted and one solo leading Mount Union to a team total of 11 blocks in the match. Bolen and Bartell finished with four each as they both had a solo and three assisted.
Darby Leininger (Chardon / Beaumont) led the way in hitting with 10 kills and Meyer finished with nine.
Kildow picked up 11 assists while Hansen had eight. Haley led the way in digs with 12 total while Bartell finished with 10.
Mount Union will now return tomorrow morning with a 10 am match against Denison (0-1) and at 2 pm taking on No. 18 Nationally ranked Calvin (1-0).
