Softball: Raiders Pick Up OAC Sweep of Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Marietta in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, winning game one 9-4 and winning game two 7-6.

The Purple Raiders (21-4, 6-0 OAC) would strike first in game one when junior Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit an RBI double that brought home sophomore Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) and then junior Tori Sickafoose (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) brought in George with an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Pioneers (11-14, 3-5 OAC) would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the third when Rachel Kazmirski hit an RBI double to cut the lead down to a run. Mount Union strike back with three runs in the top of the fourth with RBIs coming from freshman Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield), sophomore Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) and Reicosky to stretch the lead to four runs. Then, in the top of the fifth freshman Karlie Davis (St. Leon, Ind. / East Central) scored after stealing third and an overthrow by the catcher to make the lead 5-1.

Marietta would answer again in the bottom half of the fifth when Jess Brown hit a two-run homerun and Grace Elliot hit an RBI single to cut the lead down to two runs. The Raiders would add three more runs in the seventh however, with RBIs coming from sophomore Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover), sophomore Brooklyn Schlabach (Apple Creek / Waynedale) and Hahn to push the lead back out to five runs. The Pioneers wouldn't have an answer in the bottom half of the seventh as the Raiders would go on to take game one 9-4.

Sophomore Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched a complete game giving up four runs on 10 hits and striking out 10.

The Raiders would strike first again in game two when George hit an RBI single that brought in Mercer and Hahn in the top half of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Mount Union would add to their lead in the top of the fourth when Mercer hit an RBI single that brought in Schlabach to stretch the lead to three runs.

The Pioneers would answer with a big inning in the bottom half of the fourth when Jillian Middleton hit a three-run homerun and then Liz White hit an RBI triple to give Marietta their first lead of the day at 4-3. The Raiders would reclaim the lead in the fifth inning, scoring off and RBI double from Kiko and an RBI single from sophomore Lydia Brunner (Minerva) to take a 6-4 lead.

Marietta would answer again in the sixth when Shelby Metzger hit an RBI single that brought in two runs to tie the game at six apiece. However, the Raiders would once again reclaim the lead in the top of the seventh this time coming off a sacrifice fly from Brunner that plated the go ahead run. The Pioneers wouldn't have an answer in the bottom half of the inning as the Raiders would go on to take game two 7-6.

Schlabach got the start in the circle in game two for Mount Union and gave up four runs, three earned on four hits and struck out three in three innings of work. Sophomore Chloe Bird (Norton) would come in to throw the next three innings in relief and would give up two runs on four hits and struck out two. Cahill would come in to throw the final inning and gave up zero runs on zero hits and picked up her first save of the season.

The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to University Heights to take on John Carroll on Wednesday, April 17 at 3 and 5 p.m.
