Softball: Raiders Sweep Day Three in Florida to Stay Unbeaten

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team swept a pair of games on their Spring Break trip in Florida, beating Wittenberg 5-0 and No. 25 Hiram 5-1 on Monday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (5-0) struck first in their first game of the day when junior Adri George (Eastlake / North) brought home sophomore Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) on a sacrifice to third base in the top half of the first inning. Mount Union would add to their lead in the second inning when Mercer hit an RBI double through the left side that scored sophomore Lydia Brunner (Minerva) to make the lead 2-0. Then, in the third the Raiders would add another run this time of the bat of sophomore Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover), who's double down the left field line brought in junior Tori Sickafoose (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) to make the lead 3-0. Mercer would add two more RBIs to her total with a single in the top half of the sixth that scored sophomore Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) and freshman Karlie Davis (St. Leon, Ind. / East Central) to extend the lead to five runs.

The Tigers (4-4) weren't able to plate any runs in the sixth or seventh inning as the Raiders would go on to win 5-0.
Sophomore Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just four hits and striking out 11.

The Raiders would strike first again in their second game of the day, George got things started again with an RBI single to center field that scored Mercer, then Cahill hit a double to left center to bring in Reicosky and George and then Cahill scored on a wild pitch to take a 4-0 lead. Mount Union would add to their lead in the bottom of the second inning when Mercer scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to five runs.

The Terriers (0-3) would answer with a run in the top half of the fourth when Angel Santellan hit an RBI single to bring in Darian Kanno to cut the lead to four runs, but they wouldn't be able to plate anymore runs as the Raiders would go on to win 5-1.

Sophomore Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched a complete game giving up just one run on four hits and striking out five.

The Raiders continue their Spring Break trip on Wednesday, March 6 when they take on DeSales at 10 a.m. followed by No. 1 Trine at 12:15 p.m. in Kissimmee, Fla.
