ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Heidelberg in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon, winning game one 4-2 and winning game two 12-4 in six innings.
The Student Princes (7-15, 0-2 OAC) would strike first in game one when Ellie Tressler hit a solo homerun to centerfield in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Heidelberg would then add to that lead in the third inning when Gabbie Stallbaum hit a solo homerun to right center to make the lead two runs.
The Purple Raiders would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth, the first coming off an RBI bunt from sophomore
Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) and the second coming off a sacrifice RBI from freshman
Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) to tie the game at two. Mount Union would then take their first lead of the game in the sixth inning when sophomore
Emily Denney (Poland / Polan Seminary) reached first on an error and sophomore
Brooklyn Schlabach (Apple Creek / Waynedale) then Hahn brought in Denney with an RBI single to give the Raiders a 4-2 lead.
The Student Princes wouldn't have an answer in the seventh inning as the Raiders would take game one 4-2.
Sophomore
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up two runs on five hits and struck out four, pitching all seven innings.
Heidelberg would strike first again in game two, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning coming off RBIs from Murissa Drown and Caitlyn Newlen to take a 2-0 lead.
The Raiders would answer with two runs of their own in the third inning, the first came when Hahn scored after a throw down to second and then Cahill drove in junior
Adri George (Eastlake / North) to tie the game at two runs apiece. Mount Union would take the lead in the fourth when junior
Tori Sickafoose (Magnolia / Sandy Valley) and George hit back-to-back two RBI singles to take a 6-2 lead.
The Student Princes would cut the lead down to two runs in the top half of the fifth inning when Drown hit a two RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 6-4.
However, the Raiders would stretch their lead again in the bottom half of the same inning when sophomores
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) and
Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) hit back-to-back RBI singles to push the lead out to six runs. Mount Union would add two more in the sixth inning, the first coming off an RBI triple from sophomore
Lydia Brunner (Minerva) and then Brunner would score on a wild pitch as the Raiders would go on to win game two 12-4 in six innings.
Sophomore
Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle in game two for Mount Union and two runs, one earned on two hits and struck out one in four innings of action. Schlabach would come in to pitch an inning in relief and gave up two runs on four hits. Freshman
Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) would come in to pitch the final inning in relief and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out one.
The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to Marietta to take on the Pioneers on Wednesday, April 3 in an OAC matchup, with games beginning at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
