ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Thiel in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon, winning game one 10-1 in five innings and winning game two 8-0 in five innings.
The Purple Raiders (15-2) struck first in game one when sophomore Brooklyn Schlabach (Applecreek / Waynedale) hit a two-run homerun in the second inning. Then, in the third inning sophomore Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) hit a solo homerun followed by an RBI single from junior Adri George (Eastlake / North) to bring in sophomore Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) giving the Raiders a 4-0 lead.
The Tomcats (5-11) would answer with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning when Mackenzie Herman homered down the leftfield line to give Thiel their first run of the game. The Raiders would extend their lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring four runs off RBIs from Reicosky, George, Schlabach and sophomore Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison), Mercer would then hit her second homerun of the game in the fifth inning to give Mount Union the 10-1 win in game one.
Schlabach got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game one and gave up one run on four hits and had four strikeouts in four innings of work. Freshman Haleigh McCalla (Youngstown / Springfield Local) came in to pitch the final inning of relief and gave up zero runs on two hits and struck out three.
The Raiders got started quick in game two when Mercer hit a leadoff triple and then scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead after the first. Mount Union would add four more runs in the second inning with RBIs coming from freshman Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield), senior Lydia Wacker (Wellington/ Black River), Mercer and Cahill to extend the lead to 5-0. The Raiders would add three more to their lead in the bottom half of the third inning this time with RBIs coming from Wacker and sophomore Lydia Brunner (Minerva) and then Mercer scored on a steal to make the lead 8-0.
The Tomcats wouldn't have an answer in the fourth or the fifth innings as the Raiders would go on to win game two 8-0.
Cahill got the start in the circle in game two for Mount Union and gave up zero runs on just one hit while striking out eight in three innings of work. Sophomore Emmalee Marstellar (Vandalia / Butler) would come in to pitch the final two innings in relief and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out two.
The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to Delaware, Ohio for a doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan on Thursday, March 28th, with game one beginning at 3:30 p.m. and game two at 5:30 p.m.
