KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team swept a pair of games to open their Florida trip, beating Concordia (Minn.) 11-1 and Husson 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Cobbers (3-4) got on the board first in game one when Danielle Lyon hit an RBI double to left center to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The Purple Raiders (2-0) would come back with a massive four-run third inning, the first two runs coming off an RBI single from junior
Adri George (Eastlake / North) scored sophomore
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) and freshman
Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) and then sophomore
Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) hit a two-run homerun to right center to take a 4-1 lead. Mount Union would add to their lead in the top half of the fifth when freshman
Karlie Davis (St. Leon, Ind. / East Central) scored on a passed ball and then sophomore
Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) reached first on an error by the Concordia shortstop which scored sophomore
Emmalee Marstellar (Vandalia / Butler) to make the lead 6-1.
The Raiders would add two more in the sixth inning the first coming off an RBI triple from sophomore
Lydia Brunner (Minerva) that scored Mercer and then George brought home Brunner to extend the lead to 8-1. George would add three more RBIs in the top of the seventh to extend the Mount Union lead and Concordia wouldn't have an answer in the bottom half of the inning as the Raiders would go on to win 11-1.
Sophomore
Brooklyn Schlabach (Apple Creek / Waynedale) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched 4.1 innings giving up just one run on four hits and striking out five. Sophomore
Chloe Bird (Norton) would come in to pitch the final 2.2 innings in relief and gave up zero runs and zero hits and struck out four.
After a scoreless first four innings the Raiders would finally break the tie against Husson in the bottom half of the fifth when Hahn reached first on an error by the pitcher and sophomore
Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) scored to take a 1-0 lead. Then, Brunner stole second and Hahn scored on the throw and then George brought home Brunner and Cahill scored George on an RBI triple before scoring on a passed ball to make the lead 5-0. Mount Union would add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hahn hit an RBI double to bring in Davis and then Mercer hit an RBI double to bring in Hahn and extend the lead to 7-0.
The Eagles (0-1) wouldn't have an answer in the top half of the seventh as the Raiders would go on to win 7-0.
Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and threw a complete game shutout, giving up just two hits and striking out 11.
The Raiders continue their Florida trip tomorrow with another pair of games taking on Adrian at 10 a.m. followed by Johnson & Wales at 12:15 p.m. in Kissimmee.
