Softball: Raiders Split with No. 3 Case Western on Senior Day

Brunner Hits Walk-Off Single in Game Two

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with No. 3 nationally ranked Case Western on Sunday afternoon, losing game one 11-0 in five innings and winning game two 4-3 in eight innings.

The Spartans (35-3) struck first in game one, scoring two runs in the top of the first off RBIs from Carli Tucci and Isabella Russo to take a 2-0 lead. Case Western would add to their lead in the second inning when KaiLi Gross hit an RBI triple to make the lead 3-0. The Spartans would add three more runs in the top half of the third with RBIs coming from Kaila Nutter, Elizabeth Berry and Gross. Case Western would add three more runs in the fifth inning when Amanda Riely hit a three-run homerun to left field to increase the lead to 11-0.

The Purple Raiders (32-8) wouldn't be able to answer in the bottom half of the fifth as the Spartans would go on to win game one 11-0 in five innings.

Freshman Chloe Bird (Norton) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and gave up seven runs on four hits and struck out one in two innings of action. Freshman Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa. / Reynolds) would come in to pitch the final three innings in relief and gave up four runs, one earned on three hits.

Case Western would strike first again in game two, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning off RBIs from Russo and Tucci to take a 3-0 lead.

The Raiders would answer with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the second inning, with RBIs coming from senior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) and freshman Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) to cut the lead to 3-2. Mount Union would tie the game at three in the next inning when freshman Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) hit an RBI single that scored senior Alexis Temple (Mentor).

The Raiders and Spartans would head to extra innings tied at three and after the Spartans were unable to score in the top of the eighth, freshman Lydia Brunner (Minerva) would hit a walk-off single in the bottom half of the inning to give the Raiders a 4-3 victory in game two.

Freshman Kendyll Cahill (Grove Port / Grove Port Madison) got the start in the circle for Mount Union in game two and threw all eight innings, giving up three runs on five hits and struck out six in the win.

The Raiders return to action when they host Muskingum in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday, May 10 at noon in Alliance.
