Softball: Raiders Split to Open Florida Trip

Kendyll Cahill Throws Perfect Game in First Collegiate Start

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games to open their season, beating Husson 1-0 and falling to Dominican 7-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders (1-1) struck first in the first game of the day when freshman Kaitlyn Culver (Akron / Springfield) hit a double to left field to drive in sophomore Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa. / Mercer Area) to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles (2-2) weren't able to answer over the final five innings as Mount Union would go on to win 1-0.

Senior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch), Culver and Bish led the Raiders offensively with two hits apiece, with Culver driving in the lone run.

Freshman pitcher Kendyll Cahill (Columbus / Grove Port Madison) threw a perfect game in her first collegiate start to pick up the win and she struck out 11 of the 21 batters that she faced.

Dominican struck first in game two with an RBI single to left field to take a 1-0 lead in the top half of the second inning. The Stars (6-0) would add to their lead in fourth inning with a single down the left field line and then they would add four more in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead. The Raiders would answer with a run in the bottom of the seventh when Heath reached first on a fielder's choice and junior Michaela Folks (Wooster) scored, however it wouldn't be enough as Dominican would go on to win 7-1.

Sophomore Becca Landis (Vienna / Matthews) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and threw four innings giving up six runs, five earned on five hits and struck out one before senior Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) would come in to pitch the final three innings in relief. She gave up one run on four hits with one strikeout.

The Raiders continue their Florida trip tomorrow when they take on Rochester at 9 a.m. and La Roche at 2 p.m. in Kissimmee, Fla.
