BETHANY, W.Va. – Mount Union's softball team swept Bethany in a doubleheader, winning game one 5-0 and winning game two 9-1 on Wednesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (11-3) broke the zero-zero tie in the top of the fourth inning when freshman
Kendyll Cahill (Columbus / Grove Port Madison) hit an RBI single to center field to score senior
Alexis Temple (Mentor), then freshman
Faith Kiko (North Canton / Hoover) hit a sacrifice RBI to score sophomore
Sami Swartz (Columbus / Grandview Heights) to give Mount Union a 2-0 lead. The Raiders would add to their lead in the top half of the sixth when Cahill hit a two-run homerun to right field to extend the lead to 4-0.
Mount Union would add another run in the seventh inning when sophomore
Adri George (Eastlake / North) hit an RBI single up the middle to bring home freshman
Sydney Mercer (Beloit / West Branch) and make the lead 5-0. The Bison (0-10) wouldn't be able to answer as the Raiders would go on to win 5-0 in game one.
Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and threw a complete game shutout giving up just one hit and striking out seven.
The Raiders struck first again in game two in the top of the second when freshman
Lydia Brunner (Minerva) hit an RBI triple that scored Swartz, junior
Lydia Wacker (Wellington / Black River) and freshman
Emily Denney (Poland / Poland Seminary), then freshman
Kaitlyn Culver (Akron / Springfield) brought home Brunner with an RBI single and Culver scored on an RBI single from Mercer to give Mount Union a 5-0 lead.
Bethany would answer with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Emma Sorenson hit an RBI single to right field to cut the lead down to 5-1. The Raiders would add two more runs in the top half of the sixth when freshman
Faith Reicosky (North Canton / Hoover) reached first on an error and Brunner and Denney scored to extend the lead to 7-1. Junior
Ally Nittoli (Poland / Poland Seminary) and Denney both hit solo homeruns in the top of the seventh to extend the Raider lead to 9-1. The Bison wouldn't be able to close the gap in the bottom of the seventh as the Raiders would go on to take game two 9-1.
Sophomore
Becca Landis (Vienna / Matthews) got the start in the circle for Mount Union and pitched a complete game giving up just one run on three hits and striking out three to pick up her first career win.
The Raiders return to action on Wednesday, March 29 when they travel to Erie, Pa. to take on Penn State-Behrend in a double header, with game one starting at 3 p.m. and game two at 5 p.m.
