Baseball: Mount Opens 2023 Season with Sweep

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Mount Union baseball team swept its non-conference doubleheader in its season opener on Saturday.

The Purple Raiders won, 8-4, over Lawrence in game one and edged St. Scholastica, 3-1 in the nightcap.

In game one, it was tied 2-2 after three innings and Lawrence took a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. That's when the Raiders pulled away with a four-run inning, including a two-run single by senior Eric Schilling (Stow, Ohio / Stow-Munroe Falls). Mount held off Lawrence the rest of the way. Schilling finished the game leading all batters with three RBIs. Junior pitcher Jaired Lehman (Monroeville, Pa. / Gateway) earned the win with five innings of work, giving up three earned runs and throwing five strikeouts. Sophomore Chris Phillips (Elyria, Ohio / Elyria Catholic) earned the save with only allowing one hit in four scoreless innings of relief and striking out five.

In game two, senior Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) and Schilling batted in runs in the third inning to put the Raiders up 2-0. A single by junior Andrew Witte (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) extended Mount's lead to 3-0. St. Scholastica scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore pitcher Brady Hansen (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Area) earned the win as he went eight innings only giving up three hits on one run and  recorded a career-high nine strikeouts. Senior Cole Robinson (Lewis Center, Ohio / Olentangy) earned the save after having two strikeouts in one inning of work.
