ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union women's basketball team defeated the Capital Comets 77-74 Saturday afternoon on senior day in the Timken Gymnasium.
Mount Union honored its three graduating seniors before the game in Emma Cannon (Dalton), Gretchen Koken (Cranberry, Pa. / Seneca Valley) and Madison Hensley (Blacklick / Gahanna Lincoln).
The Purple Raiders (7-16, 4-12 OAC) was led by Cannon with 21 points. Sophomore Dae Dae Nash (Akron / Buchtel) finished with 15 points and Hensley scored 12 points.
Capital (13-9, 7-8 OAC) was led by Bri O'Connor who had a game-high 34 points. Laney Murphy scored 10 points for the Comets.
To open the first quarter, both teams seemed to score as they were trading basket-for-basket. Hensley, Cannon, and Nash helped the Raiders in putting points on the board as they largest lead of the quarter was three. The game was tied at 20 at the end of the first quarter of play.
Mount Union would open the second quarter by going on a 9-2 run to give the team a seven point lead 29-22. After a couple of Capital baskets, Hensley and Cannon hit back-to-back three pointers to give the team a 10-point lead 35-25, the largest lead of the quarter. Going into halftime, Mount Union lead by a score of 39-36.
The Raiders would come out hot as they opened the third quarter going on a 7-0 run. At 3:04 remaining, Mount Union's hot shooting would continue as they would go on a 9-1 run later in the quarter. Their largest lead came right before the end of the quarter as the Raiders were up 60-48.
Mount Union started hot as Hensley and freshman Mckayla Dunkle (Cadiz / Harrison Central) scored back-to-back points. Capital would answer immediately with two 7-0 runs of their own to reduce the lead to five points 69-64. For the rest of the quarter, the lead would stay within five points as the Raiders held off Capital for a 77-74 win.
Mount Union's next game is on the road as they head to New Concord to take on Muskingum Wednesday at 7 p.m.
