UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team won the first game of their doubleheader against John Carroll 14-0 in five innings and tied the second game 0-0 after nine innings in Ohio Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening.
The Purple Raiders (13-16-1, 3-6-1 OAC) got off to a fast start in game one, putting up three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior
Alyssa Rose (Madison) got things started with an RBI double that scored junior
Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch), then senior
Hanna Ingram (Stow) drove in Rose and senior
Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) hit a single to center field that scored Ingram.
Mount Union would add four more runs in the top half of the second, the first came off a solo home run from senior
Isabella Sherban (Louisville / St. Thomas Aquinas). Senior
Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley) hit a two RBI single that scored Heath and sophomore
Michaela Folks (Wooster) and then Rose hit an RBI triple that scored Guspyt to increase the Raider lead to 7-0. Mount Union would add another run in the top of the fourth inning coming off a solo home run from freshman
Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa.).
The Raiders added six more runs in the fifth inning coming off RBI doubles from Heath, Guspyt and sophomore
Ally Nittoli (Poland / Poland Seminary) and would go on to win 14-0 in five innings.
Mount Union finished with 17 hits in the game and had six players with multiple hits, including four doubles, a triple and two home runs.
Rose got the start in the circle for the Raiders and pitched four shutout innings giving up just one hit and striking out four. Senior
Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) came in and pitched the final inning for Mount Union, giving up zero runs on zero hits.
The Raiders and Blue Streaks (10-9-2, 3-4-1 OAC) were dead locked at zero thru seven innings in game two. After neither team was able to score after the eighth or ninth innings the game was called due to darkness and ended in a 0-0 tie.
Rose started in the circle again for Mount Union and pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just four hits and striking out eight.
The Raiders return home next for Senior Day as they will take on Wilmington on Friday, April 15, game one of the doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m., with game two following at 3 p.m. at the 23
rd Street Softball Field in Alliance.
