Raiders Take Two of Three

Adri George Hits a Walk Off in Game Three

CLERMONT, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team won two of their three games on Wednesday, beating York (Pa.) 7-6, falling to Mount St. Joseph 5-1 and beating Messiah (Pa.) 2-1 in eight innings.

The Spartans (2-2) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Purple Raiders (6-6) would respond scoring three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Mount Union scored off of an RBI double by freshman Adri George (Eastlake / North) and an RBI double from senior Alyssa Rose (Madison).

The Raiders would add four more runs in the bottom of the second when freshman Alicia Robinson (Canton / GlenOak) scored after an error by York's shortstop and a three-run homer by senior Hanna Ingram (Stow) to extend their lead to 7-2. York would answer with three runs in the top of the third and another run in the top of the fourth to trim the lead down to one, but neither team would score after that, and Mount Union went on to win 7-6.

Rose got the start in the circle for the Raiders and picked up her third win of the season. Freshman Becca Landis (Vienna / Matthews) picked up her first career save in the win giving up just one hit and zero runs in three innings of relief.

In game two Mount St. Joseph got out to an early 2-0 lead scoring runs in the bottom half of the second and third innings. Mount Union would answer with a run in the top of the fourth when a double from senior Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley) scored freshman Sami Swartz (Columbus / Grandview Heights).

The Lions (9-4) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 4-1, they would then add an insurance run in the fifth and go on to win 5-1.

Landis made her first career start for Mount Union giving up four runs, three earned and striking out two in 3.1 innings pitched. Senior Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) pitched 2.2 innings of relief giving up one run on three hits.

In game three Messiah and Mount Union were locked at zero through the first four innings before the Falcons (7-3) broke the tie in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. The Raiders would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth when junior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) scored on a wild pitch.

In the top of the eighth inning Messiah was threating to score with runners on second and third and only one out when senior Savannah Miner (Louisville) caught a foul ball off the bat of McKenzie Shannon and threw Tessa Spinosa out at home to get the Raiders out of the inning. Then, with runners on second and third and two outs George hit an RBI single up the middle that scored freshman Madi Bidinger (Wadsworth) to give Mount Union a 2-1 victory.

Junior Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) pitched all eight innings for the Raiders giving up just one run on six hits and striking out four to pick up her first win of the season.
