CLERMONT, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games on Saturday, they lost to Calvin (Mich.) 3-2 and beat Penn State Brandywine (Pa.) 7-0.
The Purple Raiders (3-3) struck first in the first inning off an inside the park homerun by junior
Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch).
The Knights (5-4) answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Mount Union tied the game at two when a single by Heath scored senior
Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley). Calvin would answer with a run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 3-2 victory.
Junior
Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) got the start in the circle for the Raiders and pitched a complete game giving up three runs, two earned on five hits and striking out four.
In their second game of the day Mount Union got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first off an RBI from senior
Savannah Miner (Louisville). The Raiders added to their lead in the second inning when a sacrifice bunt from senior
Natalie Martin (Millersburg / West Holmes) scored junior
Alexis Temple (Mentor). Mount Union added three more runs in the bottom of the third off of RBIs from senior
Hanna Ingram (Stow), freshman
Amanda Bish (Mercer, Pa.) and Martin to take a 5-0 lead. After two more runs in the fourth inning the Raiders would take a 7-0 lead and go on to win 7-0.
Senior
Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) pitched five shut out innings for Mount Union allowing only four hits and striking out two. Freshman
Madi Bidinger (Wadsworth) came in and pitched two relief innings giving up zero hits and recording three strikeouts.
Mount Union will play two more games tomorrow in Clermont, Fla., taking on Alfred (N.Y.) first at 10:30 a.m. followed by Coast Guard (Conn.) at 12:45 p.m.
