ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team split a double header with Penn State-Behrend, falling in game one 4-2 and winning game two 8-0 in five innings on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lions (6-7) struck first in game one putting up three runs in the top of the first inning coming off RBIs from Cami McNany, Jocelyn McNany and Samantha Manioci. The Purple
Raiders (11-11) would answer with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first when an RBI from senior
Alyssa Rose (Madison) scored junior
Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch).
Mount Union would cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Rose hit an RBI single to right field that scored sophomore
Lydia Wacker (Wellington / Black River). Penn State-Behrend would add to their lead in the top half of the seventh off an RBI from McNany and would go on to win 4-2.
Senior
Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) pitched a complete game for the Raiders giving up four runs on nine hits and striking out one.
After neither team was able to plate any runs through the first two innings of game two, the Raiders broke the tie in the bottom of the third inning after an RBI single from Heath scored Wacker. Then, Heath scored off a throwing error by the Lions catcher. Mount Union would go on to add a third run in the inning when an RBI double from senior
Hanna Ingram (Stow) scored Rose to take a 3-0 lead.
The Raiders would add to their lead in the bottom half of the fourth scoring five runs, junior
Taylor Gerback (Louisville / Marlington) scored after an error by the Penn State-Behrend first baseman. Then, a triple from Heath scored Wacker and junior
Alexis Temple (Mentor), then a single by Rose scored Heath. The final run of the inning came off a sacrifice fly from Ingram that scored Rose, giving Mount Union an 8-0 victory in five innings.
Rose got the start in the circle for the Raiders pitching a complete game shutout, giving up just one hit and striking out three.
The Raiders are home again next taking on Ohio Northern in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday, April 2, with the first game of the double header starting at 1 p.m. at the 23
rd Street Softball Field in Alliance.
