Raiders Drop Two at Hiram

HIRAM, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team lost both games of their doubleheader against Hiram on Friday evening, losing game one by a score of 3-2 in eight innings and dropping game two 5-1.

The Purple Raiders (7-9) and the Terriers (6-4) went scoreless through the first three innings of the game. Hiram broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth scoring two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Mount Union would answer in the top half of the sixth when senior Alyssa Rose (Madison) hit an inside the park homerun that scored senior Savannah Miner (Louisville) to tie the game at two.

After neither team was able to score in the seventh inning, they would head to an eighth inning tied at two. Mount Union was unable to score in the top half of the inning and the Terriers scored in the bottom half to take a 3-2 victory.

Rose pitched a complete game for Mount Union giving up three runs, zero earned, on six hits and striking out six.

Hiram got off to a quick start in game two scoring two runs in the first inning and then adding a third in the second to take a 3-0 lead. The Raiders would cut into the lead in the top half of the third inning when Rose hit an RBI double that scored junior Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) to cut the lead down to two runs.

The Terriers would add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kylie Perez hit a two-run homerun to left field to extend the Hiram lead to 5-1. Neither team was able to score over the final three innings and Hiram would go on to win 5-1.

Freshman Becca Landis (Vienna / Matthews) got the start in the circle for the Raiders, giving up five runs, three earned on five hits and striking out one in three innings of action. Senior Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) came in and pitched three innings of relief for Mount Union giving up zero runs and zero hits.

The Raiders return home next to take on Denison in a home opening double header on Sunday, March 20, game one will begin at 1 p.m. and game two will follow at 3 p.m. at the 23rd Street Softball Field in Alliance.
