Two Pitchers Combine For Shutout to Close Florida Trip

Raiders go 6-2 in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Two Mount Union pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Purple Raiders beat Salve Regina (R.I.) 1-0 Sunday at Lake Myrtle Park.

Mount Union finishes its Florida trip with a 6-2 record and is 6-5 overall.

Thomas Gallant (Pataskala / Watkins Memorial) allowed two hits and struck out nine over the first six innings to move to 2-1 on the season while Jeremy Sassano (Fairview Park / Fairview) surrendered just two hits over the final three innings to pick up his first save on the season.

Salve Regina (3-2) also got a strong pitching performance from Patrick Maybach, who took the loss after striking out 11 and allowing just two hits over seven innings.

The game's only run came in the fourth as Zack Mazza (Flint, Mich. / Powers Catholic) opened the inning with a double. Nate Duliba (Berea / Berea-Midpark) tried to sacrifice him to third but a fielding error but runners at the corners. After a ground out, Eric Schilling (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) had a single to center field that scored Mazza and gave Mount Union a 1-0 lead.

Salve Regina did load the bases in the top of the ninth but did not score.

Mount Union returns home to host LaRoche (Pa.) in a non-conference doubleheader Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m. at Rafeld-Rogers Field.
