Bexley, Ohio – Mount Union women's volleyball team completed a comeback in game one against Hanover (Ind.) and sweep Geneva (Pa.) in game two to stay perfect on the season while junior setter
Katie May (Brecksville / Independence) secured her 1,000 assist Saturday afternoon at the Pam Briggs Classic.
In the first match Mount Union (8-0) overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Hanover (Ind.) (2-5) 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 15-8.
Leading the Purple Raiders was freshman
Heaven Bartell (Cleveland / St. Joseph Academy) who finished with a team high 16 kills and tied for the most digs with 21.
Junior
Isabella Sprunger (North Royalton) and freshman
Darby Leininger (Chardon / Beaumont) finished with 14 and 13 kills respectively.
Freshmen
Catherine Klopp (Sycamore / Mohawk) and
Alexis Meyer (Avon Lake) finished with eight and six blocks each.
Junior setter
Mollie Thomas (Massillon / Massillon Perry) finished with 34 assists while May picked up 20 in the game.
Libero
Alyssa Kasaris (North Royalton) tied with the most digs on the team with 21 total.
The second game Mount Union completed the sweep of the weekend beating Geneva (Pa.) (2-5) 25-13, 25-13, 25-9.
Bartell and senior
Maria Ellesin (Alliance / Marlington) led the Raiders with kills with nine each while Leininger picked up seven kills.
Thomas had 24 assists in the game to bring her total to 65 on the weekend. May picked up her 1,000 assist in the game with a total of 11 assists and Kasaris in the back row led with 18 digs with Thomas having nine digs. Sophomore defensive specialist
Adrian Petrisko (Elyria) dug out the ball a total of seven times as well.
Mount Union heads to the 2021 Bishop Invitational next Friday and Saturday September 17th and 18th hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Oh.
