Box Score ADA, Ohio -- A second half rally came up short as No. 5 seed Mount Union lost 14-17 at No. 4 seed Ohio Northern in the first round of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament Tuesday at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears (8-5), who got three goals from Pat Berthelsen-Leon, advance to the semifinals and play Thursday at No. 1 seed Baldwin Wallace.
Logan Gebhart (McDonald, Pa. / Canon-McMillian) led the Purple Raiders with a pair of goal as the season ends with a 7-7 record.
Mount Union also got goals from Clay Barkan (Chagrin Falls / Kenston), Eli Ciotti (Canonsburg, Pa. / Linsly), Jacob Dodd (Ridgley, Md. / North Caroline), Matt Bisono (Deer Park, N.Y. ) and Alex Ellison (Uniontown / Lake)
Northern scored four goals in each of the first two quarters to take an 8-0 halftime lead.
The Raiders got on the board in the opening minute of the third quarter on a score from Barkan. Gebhart and Ciotti scored and Mount Union closed the gap to 8-3 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. The Polar Bears got one of those goals back in the final second of the frame to lead 9-3.
Ellison, Dodd and Gebhart all scored in the first 2:32 of the fourth quarter to get the Raiders within three goals, 9-6, but just under a minute later Northern scored and finished the game on a 5-1 run to put it out of reach.
Faceoff specialist Chris Motter (Hudson) won 17-of-24 faceoffs for the Purple Raiders while goalkeeper Kyle Reihner (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton Prep) made 18 saves that gave him a school record 204 for the season.
