Softball: No. 20 Raiders Split a Pair Against Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – The No. 20 Mount Union softball team (17-3, 13-2 OAC) split a pair against the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern (9-7-1, 8-7 MCVL) on Saturday afternoon at ONU Softball Field in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with scores of 14-4 and 11-10. 

Game One 

The Purple Raiders were led by. Senior Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) who went 3-4 on the day with three runs and one RBI, as well as sophomore Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) and Savannah Miner (Louisville / Louisville) as they each drove in three RBIs and each hit a home run in the fifth inning.  

The Raiders got the bats going early as Heath doubled to left field to bring in leadoff hitter and senior Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson). Dominick followed that up with a double to right field to bring in heath as the Raiders went up 2-0 after the first inning. Hellman brought in fellow senior Alexis French (Rocky River / Magnificat) as the lone run in the second inning to extend the Raider lead to three. A four-run third inning sparked by a single from senior Allie Goldy (Painesville / Riverside) brought in two runs, followed by a wild pitch from Ohio Northern to bring in Goldy off a walk from Rose. To round out the inning French brought in Rose to extend the Raider lead to 7-0. Ohio Northern came fighting back as they put up three runs in the fourth inning to bring their deficit to 7-3. The Raiders responded right back with another four-run inning off two two-run home runs by senior Miner and Heath to put the Raiders back up 11-3. The Polar Bears responded back with a solo shot home run in the bottom of the fifth, but a three-run sixth inning secured the 14-4 win for the Purple Raiders. 

Pitching for the Raiders was junior Alyssa Rose (Madison / Madison) who pitched a complete six innings with seven strikeouts on 27 batters faced. 

Game Two 

Mount Union was led by Dominick who went 4-5 on the game bringing in three RBIs. 

Mount Union got on the board first as Heath hit a solo home run to start the second game. Dominick singled up to the pitcher and drove in Hellman to extend the Raider lead to 2-0 after 2.5 innings. The Polar bears found their spark as they tallied up three runs in the third inning to take the 3-2 lead. The Raiders quickly jumped back as a double from Miner and a single from Hellman brought in two runs to take the 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth. Mount Union loaded up the bases in the top of the fifth and a walk by Miner drove in a run to give the Raiders the 5-3 lead. Ohio Northern came right back with a three-run fifth inning to retake the lead at 6-5. Singles by Dominick and Goldy put the Raiders back on top 8-6 in the sixth inning, but the Polar Bears responded with two more runs to go into the seventh inning knotted up at eight. Mount Union again rallied as they went up 10-8, but the Polar Bears grabbed two runs of their own and silenced the Raiders as they went into the eighth inning. A walk-off single by Ohio Northern ended the game at 11-10. 

Pitching for the Raiders was junior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) who pitched 4 innings striking out one batter on 23 batters faced. Junior Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) came in for relief in the bottom of the fifth and rallied 3.2 innings striking out two batters, but takes the loss on the game as her season record moves to 4-2 on the year. 

No. 20 Mount Union will continue their OAC doubleheader series as they travel to Muskingum on Saturday, April 10 with games beginning at 1 and 3 pm.
