Softball: Raiders Come to Life in First Inning of Game Two to Sweep the Crusaders

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 15 Mount Union softball team (25-6, 22-5 OAC) swept the Crusaders of Capital (10-17, 10-17 OAC) in the second doubleheader of their weekend series with a game one score of 1-0 and a game two score of 7-5.

Game One

Leading the Purple Raiders in the first game was senior Allie Goldy (Painesville / Painesville) who tallied up one hit and drove home for the Raider's lone run of the game.

It was a battle through the first four innings for both teams as neither team could drive in a run. Goldy sparked the hitting for the Purple Raiders getting on base in the fifth inning with a single up the middle. Junior Hanna Ingram (Stow / Stow) had a sacrifice bunt to send Goldy all the way to third, junior Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indiana Valley) grounded out to second, but Goldy was sent home for the Raiders lone run of the game.

Lights out pitching came from junior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) who went a complete seven innings striking out seven batters on the day. Morrison improves to 12-1 on the season.

Game Two

The Raiders were led by sophomore Olivia Lombardo (New Castle, Pa. / Laurel) who went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and one run, as well as fellow sophomore Grace Heath with one hit and two runs scored.

The Raiders got their bats swinging early as they posted up five runs in the first inning, and went through their lineup and a Capital pitching change. The Raider blanked the Crusaders in the first inning, and a diving catch by Hellman for the second out in the second inning. Capital captured two runs on two outs to bring the score to 5-2 after two innings. The Crusaders continued to fight back putting up two more runs in the third inning to cut the deficit to one at 5-4. A bunt from Savannah Miner (Louisville / Louisville) brought in two runs to extend the Raider lead to 7-4 in the sixth inning. Capital came crunching back as they loaded the base and forced a pitching change for the Raiders to bring Morrison back in the game in the bottom of the seventh. The Crusaders put up one run, but a diving catch by Miner in left field secured the second out, followed by a line drive to the pitcher to take the game 7-5.

Pitching for Mount Union was sophomore Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) who went two innings with one strikeout on 12 batters faced. Junior Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) came in during the third inning going four complete innings on 18 batters faced. Morrison came in during the seventh inning to finish the game and claim her first save of the season.

The Purple Raiders will continue their home and home doubleheader season as they travel to Wilmington College on Saturday, May 1 with games beginning at 1 pm and 3 pm.
