Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 15 Mount Union softball team (24-6, 21-5 OAC) split a pair with Capital (10-16, 10-16 OAC) in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at 23rd St. Field Saturday afternoon with a game one score loss of 5-0 and a game two win of 8-6.
Game One
The Purple Raiders had four different players tallying hits on the game coming from sophomore Olivia Lombardo (New Castle, Pa. / Laurel), sophomore Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch), senior Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic), and senior Savannah Miner (Louisville / Louisville).
The Raiders could not drive in any runs, as Capital captured the game striking first in the second inning. Mount Union blanked the Crusaders in three innings but were down 5-0 going into the sixth inning. The Raiders were unable to rally back through their last two-half innings as they dropped the first game 5-0.
Pitching for the Raiders was junior Alyssa Rose (Madison / Madison) who went 3.1 innings, before suffering an injury Rose struck out four batters on 53 pitches. Fellow junior Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) came in for 2.2 innings tallying up one strikeout on 13 faced batters. To finish the game sophomore Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) faced three batters with one strikeout.
Game Two
Leading the Raiders in game two was Dominick who had two hits and two RBIs, and sparked the five-run inning for the Raiders off a homerun.
The Purple Raiders got on the board first in the second innings driving in two runs as senior Alexis French (Rocky River / Magnificat) walked to bring in freshman pinch-runner Courtney Kenworthy (Kent / Theodore Roosevelt), and a wild pitch sent senior Allie Goldy (Painesville / Riverside) home. The Crusaders answered back with a five-run inning in the top of the third to take the 5-2 lead, but the Purple Raiders answered back with one run off a fly out from Dominick to centerfield which drove in fellow senior Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) to cut the deficit to two after three innings. Both teams blanked in the fourth and fifth innings, and Capital found their last run in the sixth. Mount Union put their rally caps on early in the sixth inning as a five-run innings was sparked by a solo home run by Dominick, followed by a double from French drove in two runs, a sacrifice out from Hellman sent in French, and Miner drove in before Lombardo was chased down for the last out of the inning as the Raiders took the 8-6 lead. The Raiders put away the next three batters to end the game on top 8-6
In the circle for the Raiders was junior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) who went 2.2 innings striking out three batters and improves to 11-1 on the season. Zody came in again in game two registering 4.1 innings with two strikeouts.
Mount Union will continue their series with Capital as they host them again Sunday afternoon at 23rd St. Field with games set to begin at 1 and 3 pm.
