Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union softball team (16-2, 13-1 OAC) took down the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern (8-5-1, 7-4 OAC) in a chilly Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader match-up with a game one score of 5-4 and a game two score of 10-2 in six innings.
Game One
The Purple Raiders were led by sophomore Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch), senior Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch), and senior Alexis French (Rocky River / Magnificat) who each tallied up two hits on the game. Senior Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) brought in the winning run on a sacrifice bunt to third to bring in Courtney Kenworthy (Kent / Theodore Roosevelt) 5-4.
Mount Union got on the board first as a triple by Pidgeon to centerfield brought in Heath. Senior Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) followed that up with a double to send home Pidgeon to secure a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Polar Bears answered back as they put up two runs of their own in the top of the second, but a single by senior Allie Goldy (Painesville / Black River) again brought in Pidgeon to reclaim the Raider lead of 3-2. Ohio Northern found their first and only lead of the game at 4-3 by putting up two runs in the fourth inning. Mount Union got to work in the bottom of the sixth inning as Savannah Miner (Louisville / Louisville) flied out to centerfield to bring in Lombardo to tie it up, and a sacrifice bunt by Hellman brought in Kenworthy to secure the 5-4 Mount Union win.
Pitching for the Purple Raiders was junior Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) who went 5.2 innings tallying up four strikeouts. Junior Alyssa Rose (Madison / Madison) stepped up for the remaining 1.1 innings to take the win and improve to 4-1 on the season as she faced five total batters on 18 pitches with one strikeout.
Game Two
The Raiders were again led by Pidgeon and Rose as they each had three hits and combined for six RBIs. Dominick also took charge as she tallied up three hits on four at-bats with three runs and two RBIs.
Dominick got things started for the Raiders as she singled up the middle to bring in Hellman 1-0 after the first inning. The Polar Bears take advantage of a Raider error to tie it up 1-1 in the top of the third inning, but Mount Union responded back with a six-run third inning sparked by a double by Pidgeon to bring in Hellman. The Raiders added to their lead off a single by Goldy to bring in Pidgeon in the fourth inning 8-1. Ohio Northern put up their second run of the game in the sixth inning, but Mount Union responded by bringing in two additional runs to end the game through six innings with a score of 10-2.
Pitching for the Purple Raiders was junior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) who maintains her spot as the leading OAC pitcher as she improves to 8-0 on the season. Morrison pitched a complete six innings with 92 pitches with five strikeouts.
Mount Union will continue their doubleheader series with the Polar Bears as they travel to Ada tomorrow afternoon with games set to begin at 1 and 3 pm.
