Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union swept a pair of softball games from Heidelberg, 8-6 and 9-1, in an Ohio Athletic Confernece doubleheader Saturday at 23rd Street Field. The Purple Raiders remain alone in first place in the OAC at 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the OAC while Heidelberg falls to 2-6-1 overall and 1-5 in the OAC.
Game One
The first win of the day marked win No. 100 for head coach Meghan Simons, who has been head coach of the Purple Raiders since 2016 with a current record of 101-80-1.
After Heidelberg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) doubled home Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) for the Raiders' first run and Allie Goldy (Painesville / Painesville) then doubled to bring home Heath to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead after one inning.
Mount Union pushed the lead to 4-1 in the second as again Heath drove in Hellman, this time with an RBI triple, before Heidelberg ralled to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth.
The next half inning, however, saw Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) double to center to bring home two runs with the bases loaded and give Mount Union a 6-4 lead. After Heidelberg rallied back once again in the top of the fifth, Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indiana Valley) doubled to bring Allie Goldy home and make the score 7-6 Raiders. Then Pidgeon added some insurance with a home run to left-center to bring the score to 8-6.
Alyssa Rose (Madison / Madison) got her second win of the season, throwing four innings of work and striking out three.
Game Two
Heidelberg again took a 1-0 lead and this time Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) got the offense going in the second inning for the Raiders as she hit her third home run of the season to left to tie the game. After that, Mount Union loaded the bases and went on to walk in three straight runs. Pidgeon then singled home Heath and Hellman to give Mount Union a commanding 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the third, Hanna Ingram (Stow / Stow) doubled to left center to bring home Goldy to make it 7-1, and then appearing in her first game of the season, Isabella Sherban (Louisville / St. Thomas Aquinas) brought home pinch-runner Courtney Kenworthy (Kent / Theodore Roosevelt) on a ball hit to left center that was misplayed by the center field, getting all the way to third, and making the score 8-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Goldy doubled home Michaela Folks (Wooster / Wooster) that made it 9-1 and completed the game in five innnigs.
Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) tossed her fourth complete game of the season, throwing five complete innings, giving up just two hits, one earned run, two walks, striking out four and moves to 4-0 on the season.
Both teams play two more games tomorrow in Tiffin, Ohio, starting at 1 p.m.
