Box Score 2 Alliance, Ohio – The Mount Union men's volleyball team (15-2, 10-2 MCVL) remains undefeated at home as they swept the Tigers of Wilmington (2-13, 1-12 MCVL) 3-0 and 3-0 in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League doubleheader at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.
Game One
The Purple Raiders were led by sophomore Cameron Ternent (Canal Fulton / Massillon Jackson) who had recorded 10 kills on the match as well as three service aces. Junior setter Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls / Akron Hoban) led the way in assists with 17. Defensively, junior libero Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Lake Zurich) tallied up 12 digs on the match.
The Raiders rallied quickly in the first set as they went on an 11-2 run to bring the score to 23-10. The Raiders secured their first set win 25-15 off a service error by Wittenberg. In set two, the Tigers kept tight, trailing by no more than two. A quick rally sparked by a kill from Ternent led to a set two victory of 25-18 off an ace by freshman setter Caleb Dawson (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley). In set three, the Tigers again kept close, but the Raiders were able to rally and force a Wittenberg timeout at 19-16. They were able to end the set and match with a score of 25-19 off a kill by sophomore Luke Trzeciak (Cranberry, Pa. / Seneca Valley).
Game Two
The Raiders were led by senior Justin Sibbel (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) who had 17 kills and 10 digs on the match as well as Ternent who had 13 kills. Leyden again led the way collecting 22 assists, and Grenier took charge defensively as he collected 13 digs.
Mount Union went on an 8-0 run to take the first set 25-13. Wittenberg kept close in the second set, but the Raiders found a 4-0 rally and secured the win 25-16 off a kill by junior Mark Bruns (Columbus / Upper Arlington). The Raiders secured the set and match win off an attack error by Wittenberg 25-21.
The Purple Raiders are back in action next Saturday, March 27 as they host the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace in a doubleheader MCVL series with matches slated to begin at 1 and 3:30 pm.
