Softball: Raiders Improve to 6-2 With Two Wins on Day Four of The Spring Games

MINNEOLA, Fla. - Mount Union's softball team went 2-0 Tuesday morning in day four of The Spring Games at Minneola Athletic Complex.

The Purple Raiders improved to 6-2 with victories over Trinity (Tex.) (6-9) 5-1 and Penn State Behrend (Pa.) (0-5) 11-2.

Against Trinity, Mount Union scored all five runs in the first two innings and held the Tigers to just one run in the second inning. Freshman Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) led the offense with two hits, a triple and a double, while sophomore Hanna Ingram (Stow) recorded three RBIs.

Sophomore pitcher Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) (1-0) earned her first win of the seaon pitching all seven innings with one run off five hits, three strikeouts, and one walk. 

In game two, the Lions got on the board first with two runs in the first two innings. The Raiders would respond scoring six runs of their own taking the 6-2 lead. In inning one, junior Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) tallied a base hit to score junior Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) for Mount Union's first run. Penn State-Behrend went up 2-1 in the top of the second, but Mount Union quickly regained the lead with Heath, junior Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic), and Ingram recording five RBIs included scores from juniors Maddie Pidgeon, Savannah Miner (Louisville), and Alexis French (Rocky River / Magnificat). The Raiders last five runs came in the sixth inning starting with a sacrifice fly from sophomore Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley) to score freshman Olivia Lombardo (New Castle, Pa. / Laurel), while French added a single to score, sophomore Alyssa Rose (Madison). To end the game Miner, who led the offense going four-for-four, hit a double to center field, scoring French and Ingram.

In the mound, freshman Emily Ungrady (Kirtland) (2-0) grabbed her second win of her career pitching four innings with two runs off three hits, five walks, and eight strikeouts. Coming in for relief was sophomore Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) who added one hit, zero runs, zero walks, and two strikeouts. 

Mount Union continues play with a double-header against Dominican (Ill.) and Emmanuel (Mass.) tomorrow, March 11 at 11:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in Clermont, Fla.
