LEESBURG, Fla. -- Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games in their season opening day at The Spring Games in Florida.

The Purple Raiders (1-1) dropped the first game to New England College (N.H.) 13-8 and then went on to defeat Wittenberg 6-3.

In game one, New England (7-4) jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead after two innings and despite Mount Union putting up runs in three consecutive innings, it would not be enough to cut the deficit. Sophomore Savannah Miner (Louisville) hit a pair of doubles for three runs batted in to lead the Raiders. Also driving in runs was Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside), Maggie Dominick (Dennison/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) and Maddie Pidgeon (Salem/West Branch).

Freshman pitcher Peyton Morrison (0-1) (Canton/GlenOak) started the game and threw three innings for eight runs on six hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Against Wittenberg (2-7), Mount Union scored two runs in the first three innings for a 6-0 lead. Junior Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi) went three-for-three at the plate with an RBI in the first inning. The Raiders continued to get hits with five batters hitting .500 or better but Wittenberg cauguht up and posted three runs over the course of the next four innings.

In the circle, freshman pitcher Alexandra Pasco (Wadsworth/Highland) got the win in her collegiate debut while only giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk after five innings of work.

Mount Union next plays Sunday, March 10 against Mount St. Joseph at 9:45 a.m. followed by Stockton (N.J.) at 2:00 p.m.
