Softball: Mount Union Unable to Slow Down Ohio Northern's Offense

ADA, Ohio – The Mount Union softball team dropped a pair of games to Ohio Northern (20-4, 6-2 OAC) in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

In game one, the Purple Raiders (9-15, 2-6 OAC) got off to a slow start as they trailed the Polar Bears 10-0 through four innings.

Mount Union was only able to get two hits while leaving three on base before getting on the board with a run in the top of the fifth as Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) hit an RBI single to left field with bases loaded to score Maddie Pidgeon (Salem/West Branch).

The Raiders lost momentum with the next three batters going three-up, three-down to end the inning and the game with Mount Union losing 10-1.

Hannah Reusser (Minerva/Minerva) received the loss and falls to 7-6 on the season after 1.2 innings pitched allowing seven runs on six hits. Jordan Tull (Brewster/Fairless) came in as relief and gave up three runs on with one hit.

Ohio Northern continued to have strong at bats in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning.

Emily Hume (Minerva/Minerva) got the offense going for Mount Union with an RBI single to center field, scoring Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside) who was previously on base with a double to right field.

With Mount Union trailing 3-1, Ohio Northern scored two in the bottom of the second inning to go up 5-1. After a scoreless third inning, the Polar Bears continued to push their lead to 8-1 with three runs batted in in the bottom of the fourth.

Both teams struggled to get runs on the board in the final three innings, each leaving three runners on base, as the game ended in favor of Ohio Northern with a final score of 8-1.

Jenna Liles (Sterling/Norwayne) would receive the loss, falling to 1-3 on the season, in two innings pitched while allowing five runs on six hits and two batters walked. In her sixth appearance in the circle, Shelby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) came in as relief with four innings pitched while allowing three runs on four hits and two batters walked. 

Mount Union will next travel to Marietta on Wednesday, April 11 for a conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
